Can Twitter be a Sales Tool?

If Twitter seems reluctant to generate revenue, there’s no lack of companies working away on monetization strategies.

One of the more interesting example’s is Dell, which has made $1 million from sales generated through alerts sent to people on Twitter about sales promotions. People interested in receiving this kind of information can sign up to receive messages for products available at Dell’s Home Outlet Store.

While getting messages about sales isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, there are clearly people who see Twitter as a new way to receive bursts of useful information. In many respects, Twitter is replacing the in-box as the place where people receive all kinds of information.

There’s no doubt you’ll start to see Twitter populated by other companies looking to leverage its popularity. The question is whether this kind of activity will pollute Twitter or whether the opt-in factor will keep in check.

Of course, it’s also interesting to see companies other than Twitter make money form Twitter. It’s like Twitter created this amazing platform that everyone except Twitter is busy trying to make money.
