Montreal Fires Carbonneau; Gainey to Replace Him

The Montreal Canadien\’s 100th anniversary season took another unexpected turn today when general manager Bob Gainey replaced Guy Carbonneau behind the bench.

Carbonneau lost his job as the Canadiens sit in 5th pace in the eastern Conference, only two points ahead of the ninth-place Carolina Hurricanes. They are coming off a win against the Dallas Stars and have gone 5-4-1 in their last 10.

Last season, the Canadiens finished with the best record in the East. But this season, they\’ve been having some problems:

The departure of Sheldon Souray and Mark Streit over the past two years caused a major dropoff in power play efficiency. Gainey remedied that by acquiring Mathieu Schneider.

Alex Kovalev had 35 goals last season, but only 16 so far this season. He was told not to accompany the team on a recent two-game trip and has played better since returning
